15 Reasons to use FileFiche Backup:
Online Backup
Online backup copies your data off-site so that it’s not susceptible to theft, fire, flood, or
other natural disaster.
Online backup doesn’t require external hardware, saving time and money on purchase, installation,
testing, and troubleshooting. Also, external hardware eventually becomes obsolete and
must be replaced.
Online backup is available over your internet connection: it doesn’t require turning on or off
equipment, digging out, inserting, marking, or extracting storage media.
Because of that, it can be accomplished automatically, even while you sleep.
Online backup allows you to get the most out your computer hardware and internet access
investments.

Automatic Backup
“Less than 1% of small businesses perform daily backups.” (Gartner Market Research) With
automatic backup, your daily backup regimen happens without you needing to lift a finger or
push a button. It’s superior to one-button backup, more efficient, and less intrusive.
Set it and forget it.

On-Demand Backup
Double-click on a backup icon and start a backup. That’s it. Backup, restore,
and verify as often as you like. There are no bandwidth limits.

Incremental Backup
Once the initial backup set is stored away, the backup is kept up-to-date by sending only
the data which has changed since the last backup. This works at the file level (i.e. only new files are
uploaded) and within files (i.e. we use a sophisticated algorithm that searches for the changes between the
backed-up and current file and only needs send the changed data).
Furthermore, in contrast to tape-based incremental backup, the backup always stores a
complete updated data set. In other words, a restore doesn’t require an initial data set followed by a sequence
of several incremental updates (as is used by Windows System Restore, for example).

128-Bit Private-Key Encryption
We utilize the Blum-Blum-Shub algorithm for encryption, which has been proven to be at
least as secure as the most secure 128-bit private key encryption algorithm.
See http://www.answers.com/topic/blum-blum-shub. Note that private-key encryption is, in general,
stronger than public-key algorithms such as that used by secure http.
Note also that you can elect for your encryption key to be yours alone. In that case, even
we can’t decrypt your data without it.

Dynamic Backup
Often, your important files are scattered in several different folders on your hard drive.
Most backup software is geared to replicating entire folders, which would be highly inefficient. On the other
hand, manual copying of these files for backup is inconvenient and error-prone.
FileFiche allows for “dynamic backup folders” - that are meant to contain copies of critical,
often-changing files. When a backup is made of such a folder, all files in that folder are automatically updated
– wherever that file may be on the hard drive.

Backup Staggering
Keeping several past versions of critical, files is highly recommended. All too frequently,
backing up a corrupted file can “clobber” the previous good version. Often, one would like to restore from
(or even just reference) a version from several days prior. FileFiche features several mechanisms to
accomplish this.

Easy to Restore
Users are often very familiar with the backup process because it’s something they do every day.
The restore process is not so. In FileFiche, restore is as easy as the original backup - click on the
appropriate icon on the desktop or in a folder. Restored data, by default, is put in an empty directory,
from which it can be copied to other parts of the file system, if needed.

Verifiable
Verifying the backup is a critical, but often overlooked (or unavailable) part of the backup
process. FileFiche provides mechanisms for users to ensure that the backup data exactly mirrors the data in the
system. A restore (or partial restore), followed by a verification ensures that the restore process will work
when needed.

Ready Access to Files
In addition to the normal restore process, users can restore data interactively using just the FileFiche
executable file. In this way, users can restore files (or simply gain access to files) on computers other than
the one from which the backup was made.

Initial On-Site Backup
During setup, the initial backup set is made. This saves time and bandwidth. Thenceforward,
incremental updates are relatively fast. This option is usually not available with other backup services,
resulting in a long period (often up to a day) for the initial data to upload.

Recovery from Partial Transfers
FileFiche includes mechanisms to ensure that if a backup is interrupted, backup will resume
from the point from which it stopped. This is critical when saving a particularly large backup set.
